Frequently Asked Questions
What is hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is an effective, psychological therapeutic process. It can be done in a relaxed daydream state or fully awake. For more information click on the link above, entitled "What is Hypnotherapy?"
Is there evidence that hypnotherapy works?
Yes. It is of utmost important to me as a doctor, to have scientific evidence that a therapeutic option works AND is safe. For example, my review of current scientific research led me to conclude there is statistically significant evidence that hypnotherapy can effectively treat bed-wetting.
Who can participate in hypnotherapy?
Children as young as 3 years old can do hypnotherapy. Please note, participation in hypnotherapy is purely voluntary. No one can be forced into a hypnotic state. If a child does not like the feeling of being sleepy or relaxed, I have alternate techniques that do not require a "trance" state. I will follow a child's cues to pace therapy according to their comfort level. Sometimes, this means ending a session earlier than expected. For example, if a child has no interest in any level of participation or engagement at the visit, I may assign "Homeplay." Homeplay can be 1 or more hypnotic activities for the family to do together when I am not present. I will carefully instruct the parent, if this is the case.
How long does each therapy session take?
Initial sessions may take 1-1.5 hours, depending mainly on how detailed the intake needs to be. Follow-up sessions are shorter. Allow yourself at least 1 hour after the end of any scheduled session to maximize your experience.
Where are you located?
I am based in Waimauku, NZ. Because clients (especially children) engage more easily when they are in their own comfort zone, I bring my services right to your home within the Auckland region. Depending on the distance, travel charges may apply.
Do you meet virtually?
Yes, I can meet with clients via Zoom.
Do you make diagnoses or write prescriptions?
No. At New Growth Therapy, my therapeutic role is strictly as a hypnotherapist. We can certainly discuss any established diagnoses. If I uncover a new medical issue that needs further evaluation for diagnosis or prescriptive medication, I will refer you back to your GP with a letter.
